What did being a Higher Apprentice involve?

“So many different things, with no two days the same. For example, one day I might be focusing more on my studies, while another day I might be working on budgeting and accounts. Other days might be more hands on, where I’m digging a conveyor in the correct way.”

What inspired you to get into the industry?

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do after finishing my A-Levels. I just knew I didn’t want to be sat behind a desk all day!

“I wanted a career that was interactive and where I can do lots of different things.”

How did you find out about your Higher Apprentice role?

“I first heard about Heidelberg Materials and the minerals industry through a recruitment website. To be honest, I completely fell into it! I chose the subjects I liked to study and found a business that wanted to support young people.”

What personal development opportunities have you had?

“I’ve been given lots of personal development opportunities since working in the industry. I’ve got a degree, Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Level 4 qualifications and had various training opportunities. Some of these related to indoor tasks, such as working with computers, and some relate to outside, operational work.

“The industry really does allow you to focus on what you want to improve on.”

What have been the highlights of your career so far?

“The amount of support from the industry as a whole is amazing. There are lots of networks, both in my company and the wider industry.

“At Heidelberg Materials, we have the Now Network, dedicated to supporting women in operational and non-operational roles. I was initially surprised about this, so it’s definitely a highlight for me.”

What happened after your Higher Apprenticeship?

“I got promoted to Production Supervisor! I got a distinction in my Higher Apprenticeship, which I was very proud of and it boosted my confidence.  The industry is so open to training opportunities and different progression routes that I want to keep my career options open. I know Heidelberg Materials has my best interests at heart, it’s so supportive.”

What is the culture like in the industry?

“I feel there’s a big culture change happening, for the benefit of everyone. It has become a lot more inclusive throughout. There’s been an increase in teamwork, communications and productivity. Everything is moving forward for the better.”

What advice would you give someone considering joining the industry?

“Go for it. Jump in with two feet first! There’s a role suitable for everyone. It might take a little time to find your role at first, but you will soon find it and enjoy it. Take every opportunity you get and don’t look back.
