What’s your current role?

“I’m currently an assistant finance manager for the A&A business, in the south business unit, where I’ve been for four months. I’ve been with Tarmac in total now for over two and a half years.” 

How did you get into the industry?

“Previously, I was heavily involved in a chemical field, and I’ve jumped into the finance world since joining Tarmac. I’ve come through their finance graduate scheme.”

What development opportunities have you had?

“Tarmac has certainly helped me to develop and become an accountant, through experience as well as doing my professional qualifications.

“Finance is a vast area, so I’m still working my way through it and learning all aspects of it. I’m certainly happy and proud of the skills I’ve gained so far.”

What’s it like to work in the industry?

“Everyone I’ve met so far has been very welcoming and very warm. They want people to succeed, so I think certainly the industry’s biggest strength is its people.

“Colleagues are happy to assist, they’re happy to help, so take advantage of that.”

What advice would you give someone considering joining the industry?

“I’d say don’t be afraid, don’t be worried to ask questions. Nothing’s a silly question. The only way you’re going to learn is by asking questions, developing knowledge, and gaining understanding and from the answers that you receive.

“Nothing’s set in stone. You don’t actually need to know exactly what you want to do now or even 10-15 years down the line. There’s no one route to get where you want to. Everyone has a different path, everyone has different roots, so just take it as it comes.”

What is the culture like in the industry?

“I feel there’s a big culture change happening, for the benefit of everyone. It has become a lot more inclusive throughout. There’s been an increase in teamwork, communications and productivity. Everything is moving forward for the better.”

What advice would you give someone considering joining the industry?

“Go for it. Jump in with two feet first! There’s a role suitable for everyone. It might take a little time to find your role at first, but you will soon find it and enjoy it. Take every opportunity you get and don’t look back.
