Studying for a degree or just graduated?

If you have a degree or are studying for one, the best route into the minerals industry is through a post-graduate scheme or internship.

Post-graduate schemes

Many employers run post-graduate schemes across the UK. These are designed to encourage new graduates into the minerals industry by providing training, mentoring and professional development opportunities.

Usually these schemes are placements, where you will get to experience all aspects of the business, alongside formal training and perhaps further qualifications to support you on your career journey.

Internships

Some employers offer internships, so you can find out what it’s like to work in an industry. These are placements for a set period of time – from one week to 12 months but sometimes over the summer months.

If you’re classed as a worker, you’ll be paid for your internship. But some types of internships, such as sandwich placements while on a higher education or university course, or job shadowing, might be unpaid.

Those employers who offer internships often recruit from among their interns, so they’re a great way to test out an industry and later find employment.

You need to be working already in the industry to take any of their courses, but they offer a range of qualifications from higher apprenticeships through to diplomas, foundation degrees and bachelor’s degrees.
