John Austin, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Derby’s Centre for Mineral Products has over 25 years of hands-on experience across the mining and quarrying sector. John brings a unique blend of industry expertise and educational passion to the next generation of mineral products professionals
From Mining Engineer to Educator
John began his journey studying Mining Engineering at the University of Nottingham, graduating in 1995. What followed was a dynamic and wide-ranging career spanning more than two decades, working across the UK and South Africa in both surface and underground operations.
Over the years, he developed extensive technical and practical experience across a diverse range of materials, including sand, coal, limestone, dimensional stone and industrial minerals. His career has been defined not just by technical proficiency, but by adaptability and problem-solving in complex, real-world environments.
Now a Chartered Mining Engineer, member of the Institute of Quarrying (IQ), Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), and Chartered Environmentalist, John brings a wealth of credibility and insight to his current role.
Since joining the Centre for Mineral Products in 2019, he has taken on leadership of both the Mineral Extractives and Clay programmes, helping shape future talent entering the industry.
A Passion for Practical Work and People
Reflecting on his time in industry, John highlights what many in the sector already know – the mineral products industry is fundamentally about teamwork and practical problem-solving.
“It’s practical, hands-on, and all about teamwork… I worked with some brilliant people and got properly stuck into solving real problems.”
While the challenges were significant, they were matched by the satisfaction of tangible outcomes and collaboration.
Today, that same passion has shifted toward education.
Inspiring Through Outreach
Although relatively new as a STEM Ambassador, John has already made a strong impact through outreach activities. He has participated in major events such as the Big Bang Fair at the NEC and a Teachers Encounter at Dowlow Quarry.
These experiences have allowed him to engage directly with both students and educators – two critical audiences in shaping future career pathways.

By opening up conversations about the mineral products sector, John helps demystify the industry and highlight the breadth of opportunities it offers.
Why Minerals Matter
For John, involvement in the Minerals Matter scheme is both logical and essential, especially with great support from his employer.
He emphasises that the future of the industry depends on diversity of thought and a broader understanding of its role in everyday life and society.
“Our industry needs a wide diversity of thought if it’s going to keep evolving… we need to help people better understand the significant role the mineral products industry plays in our everyday lives.”
Through his work as a STEM Ambassador and educator, John is helping to expand awareness, challenge perceptions, and encourage a new generation to consider careers in mineral products.
