A Career Built from the Ground Up

Mark’s journey in the minerals and mining sector began straight out of school when he started an apprenticeship as a Mechanical Engineer at what was then Castle Cement in Ribblesdale. After several formative years there, he moved to Tarmac to develop his change-management and continuous-improvement skills as part of a lean project spanning aggregates, asphalt, readymix, recycling, and cement.

He later joined British Gypsum as Plant Manager for their specialist powders business in Newark before progressing to the role of UK Operations Director for Ibstock, overseeing the production of precast and pre-stressed concrete elements. His next move took him to Laing O’Rourke, where he served as General Manager of their flagship precast concrete modern-methods-of-construction facility in Worksop.

Three years ago, Mark returned full circle to Ribblesdale. Alongside his operational responsibilities, he now recruits apprentices and graduates, engaging them with the Minerals Matter initiative and supporting the company’s school outreach activities.

Why the Minerals and Mining Industry Matters

Mark believes deeply in the importance of the minerals and mining sector. Without it, the built environment simply wouldn’t exist, and he takes great pride in contributing to an industry that provides the essential materials and infrastructure society relies on every day.

“The work we do may be behind the scenes, but it literally builds the world around us,” he says. “Knowing that what we produce supports homes, schools, roads, and hospitals makes every challenge worthwhile.”

For him, one of the most rewarding aspects of the industry is the people. Over the years, he has formed lasting friendships with colleagues who share his enthusiasm and passion. He also values the variety the sector offers—no two days are the same. As the industry evolves in its efforts to decarbonise and build a more sustainable future, new challenges consistently emerge, pushing teams to innovate and grow.

Inspiring Young People Through Outreach

Mark is passionate about engaging young people and showcasing the breadth of opportunities available in the minerals and mining sector. He regularly participates in school outreach activities, including careers fairs, mock interviews, and “speed-dating” style sessions where industries have just minutes to inspire students.

He also hosts local schools and community organisations on-site, offering a behind-the-scenes look at operations and highlighting the diverse career paths within the sector. These interactions are always rewarding, as he enjoys seeing students discover how dynamic and impactful the industry can be.

Why He Supports the Minerals Matter Initiative

He considers himself fortunate to have built a fulfilling career in the industry and feels strongly about ensuring the next generation has similar opportunities. Attracting new talent is crucial for long-term sustainability and to maintain a strong supply of high-quality, home-grown construction materials.

“If we want a sustainable future, we need to inspire the next generation and give them the tools and confidence to succeed,” he explains. “Minerals Matter gives us a platform to do that in a structured and meaningful way.”

Minerals Matter plays a vital role in this vision. The initiative provides valuable resources, enhancing the materials he has developed throughout his career, as well as a supportive network where professionals can share ideas, best practice, and inspiration. For Mark, it is an essential part of helping young people understand the value and potential of the minerals and mining sector.
