The quarrying, mineral products, and mining sector play a crucial role in the global economy. To gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities within this industry, the 2023 Labour Market Intelligence Study (LMIS) was conducted. This study sheds light on the recruitment challenges, skills need, and the impact of new technologies in the sector.

Recruitment Challenges: The study reveals that the quarrying, mineral products, and mining sector continue to face recruitment challenges across various roles. Particularly, there is a shortage of skilled workers in areas related to new technologies and engineering. Employers are keen on recruiting younger workers, including apprentices, but barriers exist in attracting them. To address this issue, the industry needs to engage and inspire young minds at all levels of education, showcasing the diverse opportunities available.

Skills Needs: With the advent of new technologies, the sector requires a new set of skills. Automation and hydrogen vehicles are becoming increasingly prevalent, necessitating a workforce equipped with the knowledge to operate and maintain these technologies. The study emphasizes the need for upskilling and reskilling programs to bridge the skills gap. While access to training has improved, there is still a demand for softer skills training to enhance communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.

Industry-Education Collaboration: The LMIS highlights that almost half of employers in the sector do not currently engage with the education system. This indicates a need for collaboration between industry and education to raise awareness of the opportunities available in the sector. By fostering partnerships, the industry can actively participate in shaping educational curricula to align with the evolving needs of the sector. This collaboration will not only attract more talent but also ensure that graduates are equipped with the skills required for a successful career in the quarrying, mineral products, and mining sector.

Policy and Decision-Making: The insights provided by the LMIS serve as a valuable resource for policymakers and industry leaders. The data and trends identified in the study can guide policy formulation and decision-making processes. By leveraging this information, stakeholders can develop strategies to create a talented pipeline of workers for the sector. This includes initiatives to attract and retain skilled workers, invest in training programs, and promote the sector as an attractive career choice.
